Rough Weekend - July 29-30, 2000
I intended to skip this race weekend because my friends Amy and Nelson
bought a house and planned a housewarming on the 29th. Dane took the Fuck
Truck to the track, and I kept his car for the weekend. I figured I'd pick
up the CB-1 motor after Amy's party, and head to the track with it to show
Mike Martire The Rock And Roll Welder. My plans were foiled, however, when
the salvage yard was already closed before I got to it. Arrrggh. I turned
off 93 North and took some back roads to the track. On the back roads, I
had the bright idea to switch on my track radio to see if I could hear
anything cool from the tower, and eventually was rewarded by Sandy's voice
describing some crash in Turn 2, I think. I was somewhere near Loudon
village. I had a brief thought that maybe Dane had crashed somewhere, but
then I realized his race would have been much earlier in the day.
When I got to the track, I saw Dane's leathers sorta kinda on a hangar,
cut up along one side. Uh oh. Wouldn't you know it, he'd had a little
misadventure in Turn 2, a small highside, which separated his left
shoulder and broke his right thumb. I could tell this was gonna be an
interesting recovery. The FZR, however, was fine. :) So...
I raced the FZR again. Nothing stellar to report, other than the fact that
Dane had changed the chain and sprockets, and regeared it, and I didn't
know that. The bike felt weird all weekend, and I had no idea why... oops.
I didn't corner work all weekend, because of not being around on Saturday,
and Dane being kind of out of commission. (Tearing up his hamburger for
him on Saturday night was fun. :) After my race on Sunday, I had folks
help me load the van, and I left keys with Paul from Motomarket. I left
early, and drove Dane home in comparative comfort in his car (read: air
conditioning - about as comfortable as the boy was gonna get). Monday I
stayed home from work to help Dane organize his world around his injuries,
and Paul L. brought the van home from the track day on Tuesday night.
A rough and unsatisfying weekend....
